Awards & Certifications

After retiring from the Ontario Provincial Police's Cybercrime Investigations Team (CIT) after a 34-year career, Detective Sergeant Vern Crowley has recently received the esteemed Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Vern has extensive experience that includes working with Law Enforcement organizations from around the world. He helped build strong partnerships across North America and played a key role in securing government funding to create the OPP Cybercrime Investigations Team. His efforts focused on improving communication between organizations to protect Ontario's IT networks and reduce the impact of cybercrime on the public. He also spent countless hours educating the public on how to stay safe from cyber threats.

In 2020, Detective Sergeant Crowley founded the Ontario Cybercrime Investigator's Working Group (OCIWG), a group of investigators from over 20 agencies across all levels of government. The OCIWG focuses on raising awareness, providing training, and sharing intelligence in the fight against cybercrime.

In 2023, the OCIWG hosted a national conference, where Detective Sergeant Crowley received multiple awards, including special recognition from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Vern holds several industry-recognized certifications in Computer Forensics, IT Security, and Cyber Incident Response.

Recognized as an expert at all court levels, he previously served as the Outreach Manager for the OPP's Cybercrime Investigations Team (CIT) at the General Headquarters in Orillia, Ontario. In this capacity, he was tasked with fostering relationships and encouraging cooperation among Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), government bodies, private and public organizations, and academic institutions.

Vern has been featured as a Keynote speaker and guest panellist at numerous cybersecurity conferences and trade shows, sharing Cyber Threat Intelligence and fostering awareness and prevention of cybercrime among attendees.
